Job Summary:
The Theater Wig and Makeup Designer is responsible for creating high-quality and innovative wigs, hairpieces, and makeup designs for theater productions. This role requires exceptional artistic skills, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of theatrical makeup techniques and wig construction. The Theater Wig and Makeup Designer collaborates closely with the production team, including the director, costume designer, and lighting designer, to ensure that the overall vision of the production is achieved.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop and execute creative and appropriate wig and makeup designs that align with the artistic concept and vision of each theater production.
2. Collaborate with the production team to understand the characters' personalities, costumes, and visual aesthetics to create designs that enhance the performers' appearance and effectively convey their characters.
3. Research historical periods, styles, and cultural references relevant to each production to ensure authenticity and accuracy in wig and makeup designs.
4. Design and create wigs, hairpieces, facial hair, and prosthetics using various materials such as human hair, synthetic hair, lace, and foam latex.
5. Apply makeup and prosthetics to performers using appropriate techniques, ensuring consistent and flawless application for each performance.
6. Maintain a clean and organized workspace, including regular sanitization and maintenance of wigs, brushes, tools, and makeup products.
7. Collaborate with the costume department to ensure seamless integration of wigs and makeup with costumes and accessories.
8. Attend rehearsals and provide ongoing support to performers by assisting with wig and makeup changes, adjustments, and touch-ups as necessary.
9. Train and guide wig and makeup assistants, ensuring they understand and adhere to established design concepts, techniques, and safety protocols.
10. Keep up-to-date with industry trends, new products, and techniques related to wig and makeup design, attending relevant workshops and conferences as required.
Qualifications and Skills:
1. Bachelor's degree in Theater Arts, Makeup Design, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
2. Proven experience as a Wig and Makeup Designer in a professional theater or performing arts environment.
3. Strong portfolio demonstrating proficiency in wig construction, styling, and makeup design for various types of theater productions.
4. Extensive knowledge of historical periods, styles, and cultural references related to theater makeup and wigs.
5. Proficient in using various tools and materials for wig construction, such as lace, hair ventilating needles, and adhesives.
6. Expertise in applying theatrical makeup, including prosthetics, aging techniques, and special effects makeup.
7. Excellent artistic skills, including an eye for detail, color, and proportion.
8. Ability to work collaboratively within a team and communicate effectively with directors, costume designers, and performers.
9. Strong time management and organizational skills to meet tight deadlines and manage multiple productions simultaneously.
10. Knowledge of safety protocols related to wig and makeup application, including proper sanitization and hygiene practices.
